I haven't fully understood why, the two versions seem at first sight
equivalent, but they're not behaving equivalently.

function when available, now that Emacs 28 is on the horizon.

In some cases, Guile cannot figure out a signature and it comes back
as #f (:t in emacs-land), rather than a list.
